Our History

Leonard J. Dunn was born in New Orleans and raised in St. Bernard Parish. He began his own business in 1983, Professional Mortuary Services, Inc., serving all the funeral directors in and around the New Orleans area. This successful business grew to serve funeral directors all over the state of Louisiana. In 1986, his services extended to outside of Louisiana which prompted him to open a small funeral home, Professional Funeral Services, Inc.

In early 1990, the mortuary services grew to where he offered low-cost funerals to the New Orleans community, this is where the “Affordable Alternative” was born. It was decided that the low-cost funeral business and cremation service was growing and extended into St. Bernard Parish. This expansion was noticed by Stewart Enterprises (a large funeral home conglomerate that owned St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home and Lakelawn Metairie Funeral Home). He joined forces with Stewart in October, 1999 to offer the “Affordable Alternative” as Dunn Funeral Services in Arabi, Louisiana.

As we all know, Hurricane Katrina relocated so many residents from St. Bernard Parish and Orleans Parish to the Northshore. Again, Lenard felt there was a need to open a small funeral home and offer the “Affordable Alternative” to residents of St. Tammany Parish. In May, 2008 he purchased a small commercial building on Highway 36. One year later, Serenity Funeral Home opened bringing the “Affordable “Alternative” to Covington and the Northshore area. The idea of the “Affordable Alternative” funeral has been very successful in Mr. Dunn’s career that he felt the need and desire to open Serenity Funeral Home, Kempton-Dunn & Son.
